In absence of a physical retail environment, shoppers are now forced to turn to e-commerce platforms for their sports and fitness needs. The demand for personal fitness equipment also rose due to the widespread closure of public gyms. The combination of accelerated online demand and decreased supply creates an environment for counterfeiters to prey on a limited-resourced public. Nancy Merritt from OpSec, joined by Aaron Parker and Jack Li from Finnegan, will discuss anti-counterfeiting solutions for the sports and fitness industry during the current pandemic. Nancy Merritt is the Senior Manager of Global Relationships for OpSec Opsec Online LLC, one of the largest Global Brand Protection service providers in the world. With a background in partner management, government and industry relations, and online IP enforcement and compliance, she is responsible for managing a global team who cultivates external partnerships in all sectors of the consumer protection ecosystem whose primary focus is to assist colleagues and clients with their brand enforcement efforts and advocate for consumer trust. She leads a variety of cross-functional projects and proactive outreach efforts with a focus on process improvement and creating collaborative relationships with ISPs, Registries, Marketplaces, Law Enforcement, Data Providers, Industry Associations, and Social Media platforms. Nancy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a Masters in Counseling.
Aaron Parker is a partner in Finnegan’s Washington, DC office. He leads the firm’s mechanical practice group and sports, fitness, and outdoor recreation industry group. As an intellectual property attorney, Aaron focuses on patent and trade secret litigation before U.S. district courts, post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board at the USPTO, client counseling on global patent prosecution and litigation strategies, and patent and trade secret portfolio analysis and management across a variety of technologies including those related to sports, fitness, and outdoor recreation innovations.
Jack Li is an associate in Finnegan’s Washington, DC office. His practice encompasses all aspects of patent law, with a particular emphasis on patent litigation. He handles innovations across a wide spectrum of technical areas, including sports and fitness, electronics, aerospace technologies, medical devices, and software applications.
