Tell Congress to support tariff relief: Pass the MTB and renew GSP
On December 31, 2020 two important tariff relief programs, the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill (MTB) and Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) program, lapsed leading to an increase in tariffs. Combined the MTB and GSP provide more than $100M in annual tariff relief on SFIA member products.
Legislation was recently introduced in the Senate to pass the MTB and renew the GSP. Specifically “The Trade Preferences and American Manufacturing Competitiveness Act” would renew the GSP and extend it through January 1, 2027, authorize the MTB and approve USITC recommendations for tariff relief through 2023.
MTB relief would be retroactive for four months from date of passage and the MTB would require renewal in 2024 and 2026. Sports bags, back packs, gym bags and football gloves/baseball batting gloves all enter the U.S. duty free if made in GSP eligible country, the tariffs can be up to 17 percent on these products. The U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) recommended 57 SFIA petitions requesting tariff relief on member products for approval offering up to $28.5 million in annual relief on these products. Both MTB and GSP are great opportunities to reduce your tariff exposure and lower operating costs.
